Positionality – Unit 2

My background is Japanese. There is no Japanese item in equal opportunity surveys, and Japanese are classified as “Asian other backgrounds”. As you can see from this, it is a very minority in the population here in the UK.

Before I came to the UK, I never felt like a minority occasion in Japan. Because Japan is still an island nation in both trendy and empirical, the concept of diversity has not yet thoroughly permeated the country. Therefore, as a Japanese person living in Japan, I had an unconscious sense of majority even if I understood majority and minority as concepts. While I was in the UK for several years, I learned what kind of discrimination it is while experiencing various racial discrimination as my firsthand experience.

I believe that my experience of being subjected to racial discrimination will be a useful opportunity to think about the positionality of students and interact with them as aspiring to become a teacher. This is not only for students with Asian backgrounds but also when interacting with students from other backgrounds.

My professional background was TV camera operator and the director of moving image in the commercial music industry. It included not only team-play and communication as a professional but also various professional tasks such as planning and designing projects, admin work and budgeting. In addition, my experience of playing roles such as nurturing juniors has many similarities to the role of teaching, and I believe that I can utilize my experience in teaching. In addition to it, I am currently allocated in CSM BA Performance Design & Practice as an associate lecturer. Therefore, my background related to production in moving image will be directly related to the subjects of this course practices like moving image production in shooting and editing and support my teaching role.
